La Mougue de la Baix is in the mountainous region of the Pyrenees Orientales called the Haut Vallespir.  To the west the Canigou mountain  dominates the horizon, with Spain to the south the Mediterranean to the east and vineyards to the north.

The nearest village is St Laurent de Cerdans, where one can find all conveniences - doctors, a dentist, nurses, a supermarket, restaurants and several other shops.  There is a school - for nursery and primary school age, and older children can take the school bus to college in Arles sur Tech and the lycée in Ceret.  Nearby there is the Falgos Golf course.  St Laurent is a very lively village with a true Catalan feeling - holding many traditional fêtes such as the Fête de l’Ours in February and the Fête de l’espadrille in July.

A bit further away is Arles sur Tech with its beautiful Benedictine Abbey; Amelie les Bains with its thermal baths and Céret with its famous Musée d’Art.  The region is well known for its artists - Chagall, Dali, Matisse and Picasso lived in this region for periods of time, where they were inspired byt he juxtaposition of “la montagne et la mer”, and even today, the artistic community is very evident.

The Haut Vallespir is a remarkable region - thousands of hectares of forest, natural reserves, gorges, Roman churches and medieval villages. A paradise for walking, mountain biking, canoeing, and it is only two hours by road to the ski resorts of Font Romeu in France and la Molina in Spain.  The Mediterranean is only an hour away,w it its beautiful coastal villages of Collioure, Port Vendres and Banyuls sur Mer.

The closest towns to la Morgue de la Baix are Perpignan (1hr 30min) and Figueres in Spain (1hr 10 min).  The two offer no end of services - theatres, concerts, art galleries, markets, and of course, train  and  bus stations.  From Perpignan to Paris, the TGV takes 6 hours and the AVE takes 53 minutes from Figueres to Barcelona.  The international airports of Perpignan and Girona and both 1 hour 30min away.
